Kearney Girls Tennis
The girls tennis team officially ended their season with Alex Massey performing at the Class 2 state tennis tournament in Springfield this past weekend. Alex represented Kearney well, with a top 12 finish and plenty of compliments not only on her athletic ability, but also her sportsmanship as well. Alex began Friday's play with a draw against the 2009 Class 1 state champion now playing for Parkway Central, and played very well before losing in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. This was the proverbial "the score did not indicate the play", as she played a lot of close games, but just could not overcome the tremendous play by her opponent. Hannah Wille would go on and win the 2011 Class 2 title as well, never losing more than 3 total games in a match. In fact, Alex had the second-most number of wins against Hannah for the tournament. Alex rebounded with a convincing win over her next opponent, Kaitlyn Wilkinson from Incarnate Word Academy by a score of 6-0, 6-1. Her reward for beating Kaitlyn was facing Suzanne Barth of Park Hill in the consolation quarterfinals (and for the 3rd time in the last two weeks), and lost in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Suzanne become one of the few players in Class 2 history to medal all four years, as she went on to take the 5th place medal this year. Alex would finish the season with a personal record of 18-6, with three of those losses coming from Suzanne Barth.
Thanks to everyone that supported the girls this season. The girls tennis team will have their banquet this Tuesday, October 25th, at 6:30pm in the Junior High Commons.
