Kearney R-1 School District Summer School 2013 The Kearney R-1 School District is pleased to now have the opportunity to offer a summer school program for our students entering Kindergarten through 5th grade! The program will be 20 days in length beginning on Monday, June 3rd, and will run through Friday, June 28th. Hours will be 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Students who will be in Kindergarten through 5th grade for the 2013-2014 school year from all four elementary buildings will be attending the summer program at Southview Elementary. | National History Bee Four students from Hawthorne Elementary School are checking out stacks of history books this week as they prepare to compete in The National History Bee Regionals competition. Sean Brown, Josi Edwards, Tess Martens , and Cameron Smith will be pressing their buzzers in head-to-head competition in Des Moines, Iowa on the evening of March 27. The National History Bee is an individual academic competition for elementary and middle school students that tests knowledge of a wide range of historical topics. Sponsored in part by The History Channel, the 120 highest scorers in each of the 35 regions attend and compete at the Regional Finals. The top students from each of the Regional Finals advance to the National Championship on June 1, 2013 at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta, GA. In 2012, the National Championships were televised by HISTORY and the winner received a $50,000 scholarship. Prize money has yet to be announced for the 2013 competition.

| Special Olympics Polar Plunge The Kearney School District participated in taking the plunge in the 2013 Special Olympics Polar Plunge at Longview Lake. Both students and staff teamed up to raise close to $5000 for Special Olympics of Missouri.
