High School Marching Band Organization

  1. Band Directors
  2. Band Officers: to be elected by their peers at the beginning of each school year to serve a term of one year. These people should be responsible and have demonstrated good leadership abilities.
    1. President:
      • - act as a student representative of the band
      • - promote and organize band activities with the director
      • - coordinate all student officers of the band
      • - report to the director any suggestions or problems that may improve the band program
    2. Secretary/Treasurer:
      • - help take daily attendance
      • - help collect all fund-raising money
      • - assist with record keeping
      • - assist the director with correspondence, letters and reports
  3. Drum Major(s): A position that promotes leadership and organizational skills. To qualify one must be at least a junior in high school and must have been a member of the marching band for at least on year. One must reapply/audition for this position before entering their senior year. Auditions are held in the late spring and will be announced at the annual awards.
    Duties of the Drum Major(s):
    • - To take complete charge of the marching band during ALL performances
    • - To assist the band director in marching band rehearsals.
    • - To serve as the conductor(s) of the marching band
    • - To serve as the assistant conductor of the concert band in the absence of the band director.
    • - Knowledge of conducting and vocal commands is required
    • - Must possess knowledge of basic marching fundamentals
  4. Section Leaders: Will be selected by the directors due to their outstanding musicianship and leadership skills. They must have complete mastery of all music, organize sectionals with the directors, and be role models for all students.
  5. Band Librarians: Will help director hand out all marching and concert music for the year. Band director will appoint position in the late spring. They will be expected to get all music ready before classes start in the fall, as well as putting away all music in score order before being filed, in the spring after classes are over. Also must provide students with replacement music if lost.
  6. Uniform Manager: Appointed by band director in the late spring to assist director in the distribution and collection of uniforms.
