KMS Pennies for Patients Campaign for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

Kearney Middle School raised money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) during March 4-14, 2013. In 2012, KMS raised just over $6000, and was one of the top three contributors in the Kansas City region (Mid-America Chapter). In the past 9 years, KMS has raised an amazing total of $51,438.23. This year, students collected loose change, brought in dollars, checks, and even paid to listen to their i-Pods, all in an effort to raise money for our campaign. Mrs. Howard's (6th grade) seminar class raised over $900. Her seminar will be rewarded with a catered lunch from the Liberty Olive Garden. The other two top classrooms were Mrs. Hodge (6th grade), with over $650 raised and Mrs. Nutter (7th grade), with a classroom total of over $680. Both classes will each be given a $25 gift card to help say thank you and celebrate their success. The Middle School's culminating activity was once again DodgeStock, during which students pay to play their teachers in dodgeball. In all, during this year's campaign,Kearney Middle School raised a total of $7,775.64. We were just named the #1 fundraising school for the Mid-America Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. KMS will be able to celebrate this achievement with an LLS-sponsored school party and the joy of seeing Mr. Woods and Mrs. Shelton being made into ice cream sundaes. Kids helping kids--what a wonderful experience!

Science Bowl

Missouri held its first annual Regional Science Bowl on March 2, 2013 in St. Louis, MO. Kearney Middle School Beyond Basics students sent two teams to the event. Out of 22 teams, the team of Ethan Miller (captain), Hope Jensen, Brooklyn Shumate, and Megan Skelton took 4th place and was awarded the Sportsmanship Award for the event. Other participants include Anthony D'Arienzo (captain), Hunter Gray, Matt Walter, and Elisha Schoor. Both teams represented Kearney well!

Launched in 1991, the National Science Bowl (NSB) is a highly competitive science education and academic event among teams of high school and middle school students who compete in a fast paced verbal forum to solve technical problems and answer questions in all branches of science and math. Each team is composed of four students. Regional and national events encourage student involvement in math and science activities of importance to the Department of Energy and the Nation.

Regional science bowl champions receive and all expense paid trip to compete in the national event in Washington DC.
