The survey will help these organizations develop a better understanding of the best characteristics that we identify as being what the Kearney Community is all about (branding). The outcome of the survey will not only benefit the above mentioned organizations but also the area development council, chamber, senior center, enrichment council and many others. | |

----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kearney High School Graduate - Rhodes Scholar![]() 2008 graduate of Kearney High School, Kelsey Murrell, was recognized at the Kearney School District board meeting held December 15, 2011 at the Kearney Middle School in Kearney, Missouri. Miss Murrell is among an elite group of students whom received the Rhodes Scholarship. This scholarship is given out to 32 students in the United States each year, selected from a pool of 830 candidates. Rhodes Scholars have been recognized in the United States since 1904 and are chosen not only for their outstanding scholarly achievements, but also for their character, commitment to others and to the common good, and for their potential for leadership in whatever domains their careers may lead (www.rhodesscholar.org). The majority of the recipients this year are graduating from either Yale University, Brown University, Princeton University, Harvard College or Stanford University. Kelsey Murrell is the daughter of Ronald and Kathie Murrell of Kearney and Dawn Murrell of Overland Park, KS. Kelsey is currently an English literature and creative writing major at the University of Kansas, where she also plans on pursuing graduate degrees in migration studies and refugee and forced migration studies. She will graduate from the University Honors Program and with highest distinction from University of Kansas in May 2012. She was one of only 10 students admitted to the Dean's Scholars Program in the fall of 2010 and was one of only 20 KU sophomores chosen for the University Scholars Program. Kelsey has written plays that have been honored by local and national festivals including the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. Upon completion of her graduate degrees from Oxford, Kelsey plans on completing her doctorate in literature. Following her studies, she plans to pursue a career as a literature teacher at the university level. She also plans on continuing to write plays and pieces that speak to people.
